Famous for unique and desirable
handbags, the Smart Tart studio gallery has become a centre for high
quality locally produced textile art. Work includes hand hooked rugs
by Ruth Holden, Sue Dove’s hand stitched brooches, creatures
and other pieces, silver jewellery by Katy Sjöstedt Hughes, small
ceramics by Mo O’Brien and resident bag maker Karen Arthur’s
framed work and jewellery.
Celebrating eight years of bag making in 2006, textile
artist Karen is making the most of her extraordinary workshop full
of colourful vintage fabrics. Squeezing as much fun as possible into
her work, Karen makes very functional yet highly quirky bags which
go off having great adventures all over the world. Each bag is unique
and made from luxurious hand dyed vintage velvets, hand rolled merino
wool felt or vintage linens and tweeds.
Karen shares the workshop/gallery with
the St Just Pottery run by her fiancé, local potter Jonathan
Hancock.
Directions : Studio entrance a few yards down the
lane to the left of Lloyds TSB Bank. Wheelchair access available
